Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Drew Brees will headline the Rochester Press-Radio Club’s 61st Day of Champions Children’s Charity Dinner on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the Riverside Convention Center.
Brees, 30, guided the New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl championship on February 7 when he completed a record-tying 32 passes in a 31-17 victory against the Indianapolis Colts in Miami. The victory capped a magical season for the Pro Bowl quarterback who threw 34 touchdowns and established a new NFL regular-season accuracy standard by completing 70.6 percent of his passes.
Brees, a football and academic All-American at Purdue University, takes as much pride in his community service endeavors as he does in his on-field performance. The Brees Dream Foundation that Drew founded with his wife, Brittany, has contributed more than $5 million in an effort to rebuild New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The money has been used to revitalize academic and athletic facilities, parks and playgrounds, mentoring programs for the intellectually disabled, housing and child care facilities.
“We are thrilled to have an athlete and, more importantly, a person the caliber of Drew Brees for our 61st charity dinner,’’ said Rochester Press-Radio Club President Scott Pitoniak. “He continues the club’s tradition of providing top-notch sports headliners and his spirit of giving back fits in perfectly with the mission of our organization. He is only doing a handful of events this off-season and we are honored he included our cause in his mix.’’
Brees will receive the Coca-Cola Sports Personality of the Year Award, and will be joined at the head table by other sports figures and local award winners to be announced in the coming weeks.
Tickets for the dinner are $125, with a table of 10 available at a discounted price of $1,200. A limited number of private “Meet-and-Greet Drew Brees’’ packages are available for $800. The package includes two dinner tickets, two 8x10 photographs with the headliner and one item signed by Brees. A limited number of VIP reception tickets (includes a Brees autographed photo and a dinner/reception ticket) are being offered at $225 per person.
